Hi, I’m Teri and I’m a weight loss dietitian (nutritionist). I help people who live in Alberta to lose weight and improve their health and wellness. I cover general healthy eating, intermittent fasting, and diets such as low carb, ketogenic (keto), low salt (e.g. DASH), and Mediterranean diets. I can do various tasks with you or sometimes by myself during sessions, such as: • Check if you’re meeting your nutrition needs • List possible ways to reach your goals • Create meal plans, basic exercise plans, and resources • Teach you about food (e.g. grocery shopping and cooking) • Help to prevent or treat medical conditions (e.g. gut issues) and symptoms (e.g. fatigue) • Adjust things based on your needs and wants I can do meal planning using quick methods (e.g. list meal/snack ideas or share a pre-made meal plan) or longer methods (e.g. put foods/recipes in a schedule or use a Cronometer tracking app that assesses up to 84 nutrients/compounds for individual clients). I’m certified in motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), so I can help you to understand thoughts (e.g. negative self-talk), feelings (e.g. anxiety or guilt), and behaviors/habits and change them as needed. I can help you to make changes at a pace that works well for you. I can typically help additional people (e.g. your family). Dietitian services are income tax deductible and I can do direct billing to most insurance companies. For certain insurance plans, I could give you a promo code to reduce the cost of a session when you book it. I do not cover type 1 diabetes, insulin injections, and tube or IV feeding. Also, ignore the word “specialties” and “package” on this page. The topics below are examples of topics that I can discuss. More information about myself and my services is at https://teridietitian.wixsite.com/home Interested? Please book a video/phone call with me or email me at teri.nutrition300@gmail.com. A dietitian for weight loss is a registered dietitian (RD) with expertise in helping clients with weight-related concerns, who will approach your weight-related goals from the perspective of overall health and sustainability.
Dietitians specialized in weight-related concerns have extensive knowledge of: Nutrition, metabolism, and behaviour change, as well as skills and experience in addressing body image concerns, which allows them to provide holistic and tailored advice based on your unique needs and goals.
Whether you have recently lost weight unintentionally, desire to lose weight, or are worried about your weight, dietitians specializing in weight-related concerns have a particular expertise in understanding the science of and the factors influencing weight and weight change. This makes them specially equipped to share strategies to support you with your weight and wellness goals.
Working with a dietitian for weight loss means you may receive support in one (or more) of the following ways:
Personalized meal planning: receive customized meal plans that take into account your food preferences, lifestyle, and nutritional needs, helping you make healthier food choices without feeling deprived.
Nutrition education: learn about portions, balanced meals, meal timing and the impact of various nutrients on weight, appetite, and cravings - empowering you to make informed decisions about your diet.
Behaviour change support: learn to identify and address emotional eating, stress, and other factors that may be hindering your weight loss or other health-related efforts.
Accountability and motivation: receive regular support from your dietitian, who will be there to celebrate successes, and troubleshoot any setbacks along your weight loss and/or health journey.
Long-term success: develop sustainable habits, ensuring you maintain your weight loss within your healthiest range, and continue to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
Dietitians support clients with weight loss goals and other weight-related concerns just like you, in many ways.
While some clients find meal plans effective, there are also many other ways a dietitian can support you. Such as: Working with you on your mindset, limiting beliefs about food and nutrition, and through supportive counselling to help you make changes that align with your lifestyle, preferences, and values.
This ensures that the changes you make will last - and can continue to benefit you long-term.
Registered dietitians are the only professionals who hold university-level degrees in nutrition or dietetics.
This ensures they have the knowledge and skills to provide effective nutritional guidance, including on topics of interest such as: Weight loss, weight change, and other weight-related or body image concerns.
To find a dietitian specializing in nutrition related to weight concerns, you can start by asking for recommendations from your healthcare providers, friends, family members or members of your community if they have worked with one, or have any recommendations.
You can also search online for dietitians in your area or explore tele-health options for remote consultations. Be sure to check their credentials to ensure they are licensed as an RD, have a license number next to their name, and are in good standing with their provincial regulatory body.
During your first appointment to discuss weight loss or other weight-related concerns, a dietitian will assess your lifestyle, eating habits, and health history. They will discuss your weight and health goals, and provide guidance on healthy eating habits.
In subsequent sessions, nutrition interventions can include (but are not limited to) creating individualized food plans, emphasizing adequacy of specific nutrients, behavioural counselling interventions on a healthy diet and physical activity, and continuous adjustment as progress is achieved.
It is important to remember that weight-related concerns are multifactorial. They can be influenced by individual factors, environmental factors and genetics.
Because of this, the management of weight-related concerns often requires a multifaced approach with client-centered care and shared decision-making at the core of effective treatment.
The timeline will therefore vary depending on factors such as individual goals, environment, weight history, genetics, financial access and more. Meeting with your dietitian is the best way to find out what kind of results to expect for your unique situation!

Registered Dietitian hold degrees in nutrition or dietetics, ensuring they possess the knowledge and skills to provide effective guidance for people who have experienced weight loss or weight gain which may put their health at greater risk.
Dietitians adhere to strict professional standards to help clients achieve their goals safely and sustainably.
To find the right dietitian for you, consider the following tips:
Ask for recommendations: Start by asking your primary care provider, friends, family, or colleagues for referrals. They may have personal experiences or know of professionals with a track record of success.
Verify credentials: Ensure that the professional you're considering is a registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian(RDN) and has experience in weight management.
Research their approach: All dietitian used evidence-based strategies and focus on long-term success, rather than quick fixes or fad diets. Some dietitians use a more traditional 'weight-normative' approach with a special focus on the weight itself, while other dietitians take a more 'weight-inclusive' approach, focusing on health behaviours to improve physical, behavioural, and psychological outcomes. In recent years, the weight-inclusive-approach has become more popular among dietitians. Choose the style and approach that resonates most with you.
Consider compatibility: It's essential to find a dietitian you feel comfortable with and trust, as this relationship will play a significant role in the outcomes of your sessions.
Check availability and location: Determine whether you prefer in-person consultations or virtual appointments via tele-health, and ensure that their schedule aligns with yours.
Dietitians specializing weight loss, change, gain and/or body recomposition focus on sustainable lifestyle changes, rather than quick fixes. By promoting healthy habits and behaviour changes, they help clients maintain their desired results in the long-term, reducing the risk of yo-yo dieting, weight cycling and promoting overall health.
In conclusion, a dietitian for weight loss and other weight-related concerns provides personalized guidance, helping individuals achieve their weight and health goals in a healthy, sustainable manner.
By working closely with clients, dietitians ensure ongoing support and success in reaching and maintaining your healthiest weight.
In Canada, there is sometimes a difference between the terms Dietitian and nutritionist. While both titles can be use interchangeably in some provinces, this is not the case in others.
The title ‘Dietitian’ is protected by law across Canada in every province. The term ‘nutritionist’ however, is only a protected title in Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Only nutrition professionals who are regulated and have protected titles have a legal scope of practice which includes: providing individualized nutrition counselling, medical nutrition therapy, and nutrition education to individuals with specific health concerns.
That said, while the term "nutritionist" is sometimes used on this website, it is important to note that we only work with licensed Registered Dietitians in good standing with their provincial regulatory bodies. That means you can be assured that all of our partners providing nutrition counselling meet the education and ethical standards set by all of the provincial regulatory bodies across Canada.
We strongly recommend that you consult with a Registered Dietitian (or other recognized healthcare professional such as a doctor) when you are considering making any significant dietary changes.
Rest assured that on Online Nutrition, every nutrition professional is vetted to confirm they are a Registered Dietitian in good standing with their provincial regulatory body.
