Eating Disorder Recovery
Intuitive Eating
I am a registered dietitian with over 20 years experience. I provide services for adults in nutrition for mental health, body image, emotional eating and binge eating disorder. Throughout my career, I have worked with a variety of populations, and one thing they have all had in common, aside from the obvious fact that we all need to eat, is that we are complex creatures, with complicated relationships with food and our bodies. And that relationship with food can really suck the joy out of life and keep us from reaching our goals. My goal is to help you heal that relationship with food and your body. No restrictive diets and no shaming here. I practice from a weight inclusive, health at every size, trauma-informed and intuitive eating stand point.

I strive to provide a safe space for all. LGBTQ2S+ welcome.

If you are interested in working with me, please contact me to schedule a free 15 minute discovery call. Dietitian services may be covered by your insurance plan.

Holistic Nutrition: An All-Encompassing Approach

Nutrition professionals who use a holistic approach to nutrition will provide support that considers the whole person, including their physical, mental, social, and spiritual health - not just their physical health.

Fostering Health with a Holistic Approach

A whole-person and holistic approach to nutrition therapy and treatment looks beyond certain organs, body systems, or health conditions. Instead, a holistic nutrition approach to care involves considering the individual in their context, recognizing their preferences, values, abilities, and environment to empower behavior change that will promote holistic health and wellbeing.

Lifestyle Factors and Holistic Nutrition

In addition to diet, a holistic approach to nutrition will consider other aspects of a client's lifestyle that may impact their health.

This may include guidance on exercise, stress management, social connections, sleep, supplements and more.

Holistic Nutritionist vs. Registered Dietitian, is there a difference?

There are different titles and terms in the world of nutrition you'll need to know to make informed decisions about your health, so let's break it down here.

It is important to note that professionals with the title Registered Holistic Nutritionist are not the same as Registered Dietitians,:

  • In Canada, holistic nutrition is a self-regulated profession which means there is no minimum standard or criteria that allows someone to call themselves a Holistic Nutritionist. Holistic Nutritionists have usually completed privately owned training programs that vary in length and rigour before they begin to practice. Because Holistic Nutritionists are not a provincially regulated health profession, it is up to clients to research their providers well before making their decision to work with the person they choose. In cases of dissatisfaction with service, clients have little recourse other than to change providers.

  • Registered Dietitians on the other hand have successfully completed a degree from an accredited university program. They are provincially regulated professionals who adhere to provincially set standards, regulations and principles of professional practice. Clients can contact these regulatory bodies for questions or malpractice complaints, as the main purpose of these regulatory bodies in each province is for the protection of the public.

Holistic Nutritionist vs. Registered Dietitian, how are they similar?

What Registered Dietitians and Holistic Nutritionists may have in common is to take into account the individual's lifestyle, environment, and personal preferences when intervening and/or providing nutrition counselling to their clients.

By considering their whole person, many people report feeling better empowered in their behaviour change and dietary choices and are more likely to make satisfying and sustainable changes that align with their values and preferences.

Both Dietitians and Holistic Nutritionists also have their clients best interest at heart, and aim to harness the power of food and nutrition to improve the health and well-being of the clients and patients they meet with.

Dietitians and Holistic Nutritionists believe in the power of food, and will emphasize the importance of a balanced diet in promoting overall health. They recognize that each person is unique and requires a tailored approach to meet their specific dietary needs, and will have a special focus on tailored food choices to support people in their health and wellness goals.

Registered Dietitians: Another Expert Option

While many people find that a holistic nutritionist is an invaluable resource in their health journey, for those seeking a more comprehensive approach to health, or who have medical conditions to manage, a registered dietitian is another excellent option.

Registered dietitians are healthcare professionals who specialize in nutrition and hold advanced degrees and certifications in their field. They offer personalized nutrition counselling and can address a wide range of health conditions.

In conclusion, both holistic nutritionists and dietitians focus on the entire person and strive to create a balanced, healthy lifestyle. By incorporating nutritious foods, addressing lifestyle factors, and working closely with clients, they support individuals on their journey to optimal health.

Whether you choose to work with a holistic nutritionist or a registered dietitian, we hope you can help you unlock the power of nourishing and sustainable nutrition to transform your life.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Disclaimer: Nutritionist vs Dietitian

In Canada, there is sometimes a difference between the terms Dietitian and nutritionist. While both titles can be use interchangeably in some provinces, this is not the case in others.

The title ‘Dietitian’ is protected by law across Canada in every province. The term ‘nutritionist’ however, is only a protected title in Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Only nutrition professionals who are regulated and have protected titles have a legal scope of practice which includes: providing individualized nutrition counselling, medical nutrition therapy, and nutrition education to individuals with specific health concerns.

That said, while the term "nutritionist" is sometimes used on this website, it is important to note that we only work with licensed Registered Dietitians in good standing with their provincial regulatory bodies. That means you can be assured that all of our partners providing nutrition counselling meet the education and ethical standards set by all of the provincial regulatory bodies across Canada.

We strongly recommend that you consult with a Registered Dietitian (or other recognized healthcare professional such as a doctor) when you are considering making any significant dietary changes.

Rest assured that on Online Nutrition, every nutrition professional is vetted to confirm they are a Registered Dietitian in good standing with their provincial regulatory body.
