A plant-based dietitian is a professional who specializes in plant-based nutrition, helping people to adopt and maintain a diet that focuses for the most part on plant foods.
They educate, de-bunk nutrition misinformation, provide advice on meeting specific nutritional needs, and guide individuals like you to make food choices (and changes!) so you can live a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
Absolutely yes! In fact, this often describes what a plant-based nutritionist main role can be. They are equipped to guide you through the process of transitioning to a plant-based diet - only to the extent this aligns with your goals, preferences and values.
A plant-based dietitian will never pressure you to make more changes than you want or are ready for, nor will they 'judge' you for your diet.
Their role is instead to share resources, nutrition information, and tips to ensure you feel well-supported and confident about your food decisions.
Dietitians specializing in plant-based nutrition can provide recommendations on: Plant-based foods, grocery shopping, meal planning, and strategies to help you adapt to your new eating habits while ensuring you include foods (or supplements when needed) that include all of the necessary nutrients for optimal health.
Usually not, the difference lies less in the dietitian and more with the client they are meeting. Whether a dietitian focuses on plant-based eating (mostly plant foods, but can include animal foods too) or a vegan dietary pattern (no animal products at all) will depend on the values and preferences of the client they are meeting.
Dietitians specializing in plant-based diets will be comfortable assessing and supporting people following all different kinds of plant-based diets including vegetarian, pescatarian, vegan, flexitarian and more.
One reason is because many people find themselves following different versions of plant-based diets during their life and transition between these depending on changing circumstances, values, and preferences.
Dietitians specializing in all different kinds of plant-based diets can best help people navigate these differences.
In both cases, you can expect to receive personalized nutrition counselling and help in making informed decisions about your diet and health.
Yes, in fact, that research suggests that people following plant-based and/or vegan diets tend to have body weights that are leaner than the reference range.
However, it is important to note that appropriate planning is needed to lower the risk of nutrient deficiencies. A plant-based or vegan dietitian can help you develop a personalized nutrition plan that incorporates nutrient-dense, plant-based foods, while also providing support and accountability throughout your health and wellness journey.
Disclaimer: note that weight loss may or may not be recommended as a healthful or helpful goal for all persons, therefore if weight loss is part of your goals, we recommend you discuss this with your plant-based dietitian to find the best next steps for you!

In Canada, there is sometimes a difference between the terms Dietitian and nutritionist. While both titles can be use interchangeably in some provinces, this is not the case in others.
The title ‘Dietitian’ is protected by law across Canada in every province. The term ‘nutritionist’ however, is only a protected title in Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Only nutrition professionals who are regulated and have protected titles have a legal scope of practice which includes: providing individualized nutrition counselling, medical nutrition therapy, and nutrition education to individuals with specific health concerns.
That said, while the term "nutritionist" is sometimes used on this website, it is important to note that we only work with licensed Registered Dietitians in good standing with their provincial regulatory bodies. That means you can be assured that all of our partners providing nutrition counselling meet the education and ethical standards set by all of the provincial regulatory bodies across Canada.
We strongly recommend that you consult with a Registered Dietitian (or other recognized healthcare professional such as a doctor) when you are considering making any significant dietary changes.
Rest assured that on Online Nutrition, every nutrition professional is vetted to confirm they are a Registered Dietitian in good standing with their provincial regulatory body.
